Swansea Museum
Overview
The Swansea Museum is said to be one of the oldest museums in the city of Wales. This museum houses some of the cultural and historical background of Swansea. This particular museum was founded in the year 1834 and since then it has become one of the famous tourist attractions in the country. Swansea museum attracts many tourists from across the whole world. Situated in the Maritime Quarter, this museum has absorbing treasures of foreign and local artifacts which surprises both the visitors and the local people alike. One of the main interesting exhibits at this museum is the 2000 year old Egyptian Mummy. Some of the collections of this museum contain different kinds of objects from the ancient Swansea and from other of the world.
The Structure
The construction of the Swansea Museum was completed in the year 1841 in an impressive style of Neo-Classical structural design. This museum has an architectural significance as it has been listed as a second grade structure. Regrettably, the grand stone staircase within the building makes a difficult access for disabled people. However, improvements are being undertakes in order to make an easy access for every people.
150 Years of Collection
This museum was in fact established by the group of people from the Royal Institution of South Wales because they wanted to discuss and investigate all the arts, science and the historical aspects at the start of the 19th century. Under the sponsorship of these people this museum prospered throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and still continues to be one of the famous centers of learning and culture. In due course, the Royal Institution of South Wales was not able to sponsor the maintenance of this museum and so they decided to form a 10 year partnership deal with the University College of Swansea.
However, in the year 1980 this treaty also felt prey to some of the economic cuts and this structure was under the treat of closure. Later in the year 1991 due to the support from both the national and local people the Swansea City Council was able to save this museum from closure. All the collections of this museum were literally saved as this museum became the part of Museum Services.
Repairs and Renovations
Since September 1991, this museum has undergone several repairs and renovations. However, in order to undertake this huge task the money of Swansea City Council was coordinated by funds from the Museums & Galleries Commission, the Council of Museums in Wales, the Wolfson Trust and the Welsh Development Agency. At present, this structure forms an important landmark at the entrance of Swansea.
